Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated on 2nd October to mark the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.He was also popularly known as the “Father of the Nation”.Gandhi Jayanti is marked by prayer services and tributes all over India, especially at Raj Ghat, Gandhi’s memorial in New Delhi where he was cremated.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, at Porbandar, a small town on the western coast of India, which was then one of the many tiny states in Kathiawar. Gandhiji was born in middle class family of Vaishya caste. His father, Karamchand Gandhi, was a Dewan or Prime Minister of Porbandar. His mother, Putlibai, was a very religious lady and left a deep impression on Gandhiji’s mind.
Mahatma Gandhi popularly known as Father of Nation played a stellar role in India’s freedom struggle.He was also commonly known as ‘Mahatma’ (meaning ‘Great Soul’).His birthday, 2 October, is commemorated as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday, and world-wide as the International Day of Nonviolence.
